Venue Information
The main venue for the IVSA 2009 conference will be the Learning Gateway building situated at the University of Cumbria's Fusehill Street campus in central Carlisle (Fusehill campus map).
The Learning Gateway is a unique building that seeks to emphasise the excitement of learning and since opening in 2006 has helped the University to fulfill its aspirations for flexible and distributed learning.
Based around interactivity, flexibility and innovation, the Learning Gateway is an advanced, flexible space that offers students, visitors and staff alike an exciting and diverse range of learning opportunities and experiences. Each of the ten flexi-rooms is equipped with DVD/VHS players, projectors, interactive whiteboards, laptop docking stations, wireless laptop accessories and flexible, moveable furniture. Carrock Hall is a new, modern and stylish student residence located on the Fusehill Street Campus, which provides:
- 85 single, en-suite rooms in 13 Flats, each accommodating between 5 and 8 people
- Each room is tastefully decorated and comprises a wardrobe, bed, bedside cabinet, desk, shelves and radiator
- The en-suite shower room provides a toilet, wash hand basin and shower
- Each bedroom has broadband internet access and a TV aerial socket
- Each flat has a shared fully-fitted kitchen with electric cooker, fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster
- Each kitchen has a breakfast bar and communal area with easy chairs
- 24-hour security staff and CCTV

Ibis Carlisle Hotel
The Ibis Carlisle hotel is located in the centre of the city, 200 m from the main railway station and only a 5-7 minute walk from the Fusehill Street campus. The 102 rooms are air-conditioned and benefit from use of our hotel amenities, including free outdoor parking, a bar serving light meals and snacks 24 hours 7 days as well as wireless internet access.
The normal cost for a room is £57.00 per room with an additional £5.50 for breakfast. However, Ibis are offering a special conference deal of £47.00 per room whether there is one, two or a family in a room (breakfast is also included in this rate).

Crown Mitre Hotel
The Crown Mitre Hotel was built in 1905 on the site of the original Crown and Mitre Inn which dates back to before the Jacobite Rebellion of 1746. The Inn was demolished in 1902 to make way for the existing Hotel which took 3 years to build.
Ideally situated in the centre of town, the hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Fusehill Street campus.
The Crown and Mitre are offering a special conference rate of £69.00 per single room per night and £89.00 per twin/double room per night on a bed and breakfast basis.

Blackpool Airport is just 40 minutes drive from Cumbria-The Lake District, Blackpool Airport is very well located with the passenger terminal just 5 minutes walk from Squires Gate Railway Station. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is the fastest growing regional airport for scheduled traffic and serves over 60 destinations with all the major operators including Ryanair, EasyJet and Wizz Air. If you're flying into London Heathrow, Stansted, Luton or Gatwick airports Cumbria-The Lake the train is the easiest option as there's a direct hourly service from London Euston station in central London to Carlisle that takes just over 3 hours.

Manchester Airport is the 3rd largest airport in the UK and offers an international gateway from all parts of the world. Newcastle Airport is served by the fast-transit Metro system connecting the airport directly with Newcastle Central rail station, from where there are regular services to Carlisle.

BY TRAIN
From Scotland, the North West, the Midlands, and Southern England - Virgin Trains via the West Coast Main Line call at Carlisle station and traveling from both Glasgow and Edinburgh takes less than two hours.
From the North East - Northern Rail via the Tyne Valley Line calls at Carlisle, traveling from Newcastle takes approximately 90 minutes.
From Yorkshire, Manchester and Northern Wales - both Northern Rail & Transpennie Express trains both call at Carlisle.
Fusehill Street campus is a 15 minute walk, or short taxi ride, from the railway station

BY ROAD
Using motorways the M6 is the most direct route to reach Cumbria. The average journey time from London and the south east (London) is around 5 hours and about 2 hours from Manchester. The A69 and A66 provide road links from the North East (Newcastle).
From the north or south leave the M6 at junction 43 for Carlisle (A69). Head into Carlisle along Warwick Road. Turn left at the third set of traffic lights into Greystone Road then turn right into Fusehill Street. The Fusehill Street campus is the second entrance on the right.
